Frequently asked questions

What painting services do you provide?

Shanley Painting provides interior and exterior painting for homes, investment properties and selected commercial properties. Services include wall and ceiling painting, exterior repaints, roof painting, preparation, patching, sanding, timber preparation, doors, trims, fences and other painting and decorating work.

Which areas do you service?

We provide painting services across the Gold Coast and nearby suburbs of South Brisbane. Contact us with your property address and project details to confirm whether your location is within our service area.

How do you calculate a painting quote?

We consider:

  • The size and layout of the property.

  • The condition of the surfaces.

  • Required scraping, sanding, filling or repairs.

  • Access, height and site conditions.

  • The type of paint and finish required.

  • The number of coats.

  • Doors, trims, ceilings and other included areas.

  • Furniture, protection and clean-up requirements.

A proper assessment is important because two properties with the same floor area can require very different amounts of preparation and painting.

Interior Painting

What interior surfaces do you paint?

We paint walls, ceilings, doors, architraves, skirting boards, trims, wardrobes and other suitable interior surfaces. We can discuss the best preparation and finish for each area.

Do you repair walls before painting?

Minor preparation can include filling small holes, sanding rough areas, repairing minor surface imperfections and spot-priming repaired or bare sections. Larger damage, water damage, movement cracks or building repairs may require a separate trade before painting begins.

Can you paint over dark colours?

Yes, in many cases. The amount of preparation and paint required depends on the existing colour, the new colour and the condition of the surface. Strong or dark colours may require additional preparation or a suitable high-opacity primer.

Can you paint ceilings as well as walls?

Yes. Ceilings can be included in an interior painting project. Ceiling surfaces may require stain blocking, patching or additional preparation if there are water marks, smoke stains or previous coating problems.

Do I need to move furniture before painting?

Small items should be removed before work begins. Larger furniture should be moved away from the walls where possible. We can discuss protection and access requirements during the quoting process.

How long does interior painting take?

The time depends on the number of rooms, preparation required, furniture and access, the number of coats and drying conditions. A small repaint may take a few days, while a larger property may take longer.

Exterior Painting

What preparation is required before exterior painting?

Exterior preparation may include washing, scraping loose or flaking paint, sanding, filling minor defects, repairing small areas, removing surface contamination and priming bare or repaired surfaces. The preparation required depends on the condition of the property.

Do you pressure clean before exterior painting?

Pressure cleaning may be recommended to remove dirt, mould, chalking and loose contamination. The correct cleaning method depends on the surface and its condition. Surfaces must also be allowed to dry properly before painting.

Can you paint over peeling paint?

Loose and failing paint should not simply be painted over. It normally needs to be scraped back and the exposed surface prepared and primed as required. The amount of removal depends on how widely the existing coating has failed.

How many coats of paint are required?

The number of coats depends on the existing surface, colour change, paint product, coverage, surface porosity and finish required. The appropriate paint system will be discussed when the project is assessed.

How long does an exterior repaint take?

Many residential exterior repaints take several days, but the timeframe varies according to the size of the property, surface condition, repairs, access, weather and drying times between coats.

Can exterior painting be completed in wet weather?

Painting generally requires suitable weather and dry surfaces. Rain, high humidity, strong winds and unsuitable temperatures can affect preparation, drying and the final finish. Work may need to be rescheduled when conditions are not suitable.
